Biography and Pratice History:
Prior to coming to Pawling in 1993, Dr.Castiglia was in private practice in Somers, NY. He completed
his undergraduate training at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude
and 2nd in his class in 1980. He went on to attend medical school at the State University of
New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. There, he graduated in 1984 with honors.
He went on to Residency training in Family Practice at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, which is also located in
Brooklyn, NY. In 1992, he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice which is conferred
upon Family Physicians completing a certain amount of Continuing Medical Education. In 1994 he completed
his Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine training and in 1995 he completed his Added Qualoifications in Sports Medicine
training.
Dr.Castiglia chose to specialize in Family Practice because this field offered him the greatest breadth of training than any
other field of medicine. He felt there was no piece of information that was not pertinent to his training,
since it all may be used in the care of his patients. He had heard a saying that specialists learn more
and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing while family physicians learn less and less about more
and more until they knew nothing about everything. It was this challenge that motivated Dr.Castiglia to
choose Family Medicine and be committed to a lifetime of learning. Furthermore, the ability to see patients
of all ages and with all kinds of medical needs made this field of medicine most attractive to him.
As a family physician whose patients range from infancy through seniors, he has few words of advice
for folks who live in the surrounding communities. He recommends:
1. Stay informed.
Be an active participant in your own health care.
2. Stay active, both physically and mentally
3. Do things you enjoy doing
4. Take some time for yourself
each day
5.
Eat with moderation.
6.
Avoid smoking
7. Exercise every day
